<p><a name="index-machine_002dindependent-syntax-112"></a><a name="index-syntax_002c-machine_002dindependent-113"></a>This chapter describes the machine-independent syntax allowed in a
source file. <samp><span class="command">as</span></samp> syntax is similar to what many other
assemblers use; it is inspired by the BSD 4.2
assembler, except that <samp><span class="command">as</span></samp> does not assemble Vax bit-fields.
